Reversing daily course offers unexpected rewards

A Special Contribution to Reasons to Run By Robert Trishman

“Want to do our route in reverse today?”

My running buddy asked me this during one of our recent morning jaunts, very early when there’s less heat, less traffic and therefore more oxygen for us to enjoy.

Agreeable as I usually am, I went for it — and I don’t know if I can go back.

Running through grief

Just over thirteen years ago I lost a baby girl. Her name was Samantha. She was simply born too early and died after only living for five short hours.

That was a difficult time for me and my husband as it was our first pregnancy and we had hopes of raising a family. As a long time runner, I found that I coped best with the loss and pain by running. It gave me time to think about my experience and sort out my feelings.

Explaining my passion to non-running friends

When I was in college, I had a friend who loved to knit. She made the most beautiful blankets. I was envious of her skill and begged her to teach me. After hours of patient guidance, I had created my own blanket. It was about two feet wide and ten feet long. The edges were crooked and the whole thing was a little lumpy. It looked nothing like my friend’s gorgeous creations. Not to mention, the peace she said she found as she knitted was not something I experienced.

All I felt was frustration and tired fingers. I just didn’t get it and I have yet to pick up knitting needles again. I imagine this is how many of my non-running friends feel about running. Continue reading»

Taking the fear out of running

I have a fear of heights. And snakes. But mostly heights.Roller coasters are devices of torture. The mere thought of one makes my heart pound and my palms sweat. I don’t get the fun of being thrown around, secured by nothing more than a polyester seatbelt and someone else’s faith in physics. But I also have a fear of looking stupid, so when I was 18 and my date took me to Lagoon, it was as if all my fears collided into one gigantic horror flick, with me as the star.

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah runners now have one more reason to lace up those shoes and train. Dolphin Events, the same Utah-based company that invested in the Ragnar Relay series (owner of Wasatch Back) will produce Salt Lake City’s third marathon of the year.

With US Road Sports hoping to revitalize the nine-year-old Salt Lake Marathon on April 21 and the Deseret News Marathon running through Salt Lake City on July 24, Dolphin officials chose to offer the first annual Utah Marathon and Fittest State Festival on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012.

Good news for the thousands of runners already registered for the 2012 Salt Lake Marathon.

The new owners are offering free entry into any of their other events if, for some reason, the permits are denied and they are unable to host the 2012 marathon in Salt Lake City.

“We have every reason to believe that the 2012 event is going to take place,” said US Road Sports founding partner Peter Handy. “We are encouraging people to register to run, keep training and come join us on April 21. If we are wrong, we want to reward the runners for all of their hard work.”

Thousands of runners have already registered for this year’s marathon, which was owned by Devine Racing until Feb. 10 when Handy’s company purchased it. Continue reading»

I run for my daughters

Valentine’s Day is drawing close once again. While I’m not a mushy-gushy kind of girl, I do relish the opportunity to really think about the great loves of my life. I’ve discovered that running has only enhanced those loves. Magnified them and intensified them.

Running has not only made me a better mother, but has helped me put into perspective what I truly value and what I want for my own girls as they grow into their own.

So, to start this month of devotion, I feel it appropriate to try to put into words why running is so vital for me as a mother.

To my daughters:

Home, sweet home at the fun Herriman triathlon

Just over a month ago, it took me 16 hours, 36 minutes and four seconds to get my chubby body to chug along the 140.6 miles from the starting line to the finish line of my first Ironman triathlon. And that might not have been the most exhausting part of the sweet experience.

My family drove about 1,500 miles round-trip – and spent nearly a full day and night in the packed Suburban – for my IM debut in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Fast forward to this past Saturday, and you can guess a big reason why I thoroughly enjoyed doing the Black Ridge Triathlon that so happened to take place in my Herriman neighborhood.

The starting line was only a little further away than my snooze button. Ahhhh.
The lake is about a mile drive from my house. Same for the finish line at our town park. Heck, I had to swim further than that (2.4 miles) just to get to the bike portion of my Ironman race. Continue reading»

Dirty Dash offers good, clean fun

MIDWAY, Summit County — How do you turn a 5K into something just about anyone would want to do?

Cover it in mud.

Sounds simple, even silly, but adding copious amounts of water to a trail run turns what would normally be a tough task into child’s play.

Seriously.

Adding mud to a run is like dipping raisins in chocolate. It’s taking something that’s wholesome but unappealing to many and making it a lot more enticing by coating it in something nearly everyone loves. Continue reading»
